The requirement

During works or interventions on the rail network, it is necessary to put in place temporary signage to ensure the safety of employees. The aim of this use case is to modernise these boxes in order to improve the working conditions of the operatives, by improving the ergonomics and autonomy of the box and also by integrating geolocation functions into the product. SCLE SFE, a specialist in the design and production of railway signalling equipment, and TLTI - TOUTE LA TOLERIE INDUSTRIELLE, a specialist in the production of equipment for railway infrastructure, wanted to meet this need by committing to a 4-month sprint.

The solution

To meet this need, SCLE SFE and TLTI - TOUTE LA TOLERIE INDUSTRIELLE have worked together to develop a new type of housing that is lighter, easier to handle, more versatile in terms of power supply and with greater autonomy. What's more, this new housing incorporates supervision functions, enabling its location and autonomy level to be monitored in real time.

Experimentation

The experimentation took place over a 4-month sprint, during which several workshops were organised with the project teams to validate the concepts and technical solutions envisaged. Two on-site deployments were carried out to test the prototype:1. The first deployment enabled the functional prototype to be presented, validating its design, ergonomics and operation.2. The second deployment took place at night on a line in operation. The aim was to test the handling of the box by field operatives and to compare the performance of the lighting system and the visibility of signage in low-light conditions with an existing box.

Learning

As part of this trial, a new generation of signal boxes was designed from scratch. In just four months, a TRL5-level functional prototype was produced and tested on site, validating most of the functionalities and gathering feedback from the business agents on its use. Established in Toulouse and Marseille for over 50 years, SCLE SFE designs, produces, installs and maintains electronic equipment and software for rail and energy players. Agence Marseille is specialized in the design and production of analog (N.S1 blocks) and digital railway signalling equipment (safety systems up to SIL4 based on the BGS, Generic Safety Block). In addition to these highly safe signaling products subject to long and complex verification and validation processes, SCLE SFE has created an Agile team, dedicated to innovation and the development of connected rail solutions.

SCLE SFE's involvement in the Rail Open Lab is motivated by its operational experience in the Railway industry, its expertise in connected objects and in system and software architecture design, its ability to develop and industrialize prototypes and its strategy to develop its offer while remaining as close as possible to customer needs.
